Programming labs run on Python, C/C++ and Java, taught through live coding and worked examples.
About the electrical and computer lab instructor job in Baghdad
As a member of the instructional staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the instructor reports to the Department Chair. Alongside faculty and lab staff, the post also feeds into planning the department’s lab offerings.
Responsibilities
- Teaching the undergraduate lab sessions for computer science, computer engineering and electrical engineering, in step with the instructors and coordinators of the theory courses
- Leading hands-on labs and recitations that cover programming at introductory and intermediate level (Python, C/C++, Java), web development, databases, networks, operating systems, software engineering, discrete structures, data structures and algorithms, and object-oriented design, teaching through live coding, worked examples and problem solving that the instructor guides
- Running labs on cybersecurity, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, such as data analysis in Jupyter, training and evaluating models, and security exercises kept controlled inside isolated lab environments
- Producing lab manuals, safety procedures, programming exercises, test suites and starter code for assigned courses and revising them over time, each tied to the learning outcomes of its course and to ABET student outcomes
- Setting up software environments (cloud accounts, containers, virtual machines, compilers, IDEs) along with hardware kits, development boards and other equipment so each session is ready to run, and working with IT services and the lab manager on which materials, hardware and software licenses are needed, plus inventory and procurement support
- Marking code submissions and lab reports against clearly defined rubrics, using automated tests and code review to give timely feedback covering documentation, style, design and correctness, and upholding academic integrity through code similarity checks, authentic assessment and guidance for using AI coding assistants responsibly and openly, as AUIB policy sets out
- Mentoring and supervising students in the lab and during office hours to build habits of computational thinking, methodical debugging, scientific inquiry and safety awareness, while enforcing lab safety and acceptable-use policies, electrical safety included
- Completing the training and certification required on lab equipment, software and procedures before supervising independently, and contributing to meetings, committees and planning at department and college level
Requirements
- A master’s degree earned at a reputable, accredited university; a closely related field is accepted alongside computer engineering and computer science
- University or college teaching or lab instruction that has included programming or computer science lab courses
Preferred qualifications
- Prior experience in managing the setup of computing or electronics labs, plus solid knowledge of safety protocols, instrumentation and lab design in electrical and computer engineering
- Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals: operating systems, databases, networks, computer organization, discrete mathematics, data structures and algorithms, and object-oriented programming
- Competence in two or more languages that undergraduate courses commonly use (Python, C/C++ or Java, for example), including writing clean, well-documented examples and debugging student programs efficiently
- Hands-on familiarity with software engineering practice, including version control with Git and GitHub, the Linux command line, debugging tools, unit testing and IDEs such as VS Code, Eclipse or IntelliJ
- Familiarity with tools for data science, machine learning and AI (Jupyter, NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow or PyTorch), alongside cybersecurity lab platforms used for practical work
- Experience with learning management and automated grading platforms such as Canvas, Moodle, GitHub Classroom or Gradescope, together with knowledge of computer science teaching methods: formative assessment, project-based and scaffolded labs, pair programming, live coding and support for novice programmers
- Familiarity with how American universities teach, especially in labs, including assessing student outcomes in line with ABET, and with engineering software used for simulation, data management and lab teaching, such as MATLAB, Multisim, LTspice, Quartus or Arduino IDE
- Excellent written and spoken English for explaining technical ideas clearly, strong organization and time management, and the ability to collaborate with faculty and lab staff as well as to supervise and mentor students in the lab, with safety and learning outcomes both in view
