About the Experience Calculator

Job ads often ask for a minimum number of years. This calculator reads your periods in common date formats, merges overlapping jobs so months are not counted twice, lists gaps longer than a month, and tells you exactly how to state your total on your CV.

When to use the Experience Calculator?

When a posting requires a number of years of experience and you want your true figure in months, especially if you worked at several employers, held two jobs at once, or are still in your current job. It also helps when filling in application forms that ask for experience in years.

How to use the Experience Calculator?

  1. Write each job period on its own line.
  2. Choose whether to remove overlaps.
  3. Press “Calculate experience”.
  4. Use the suggested sentence in your CV summary.

How to read the result

The total appears in years and months, with a table of the periods as the tool read them. Review the table line by line; it shows any date written in a format the tool could not read as you meant.

Tips for a better result

  • Write the month with the year when you know it; precision improves the calculation.
  • Turn on overlap removal if you worked for two employers at once, so the same period is not counted twice.
  • Write present for your current job; the tool counts up to today.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting university training toward the experience a posting requires when the posting does not explicitly accept it.
  • Forgetting that gaps between jobs are not counted; the result is your actual experience, not the time between your first job and today.
  • Rounding the number up when stating it to an employer; it is often checked against experience certificates.

Note: The calculation is an estimate to the month, and employers may count experience in their own way.
