About the Career Skill Map
A picture makes priorities obvious. The map places your core skills around the target role, sized by level, and shows the required gaps and supporting skills. Below it, a prioritized list tells you what to strengthen and what to acquire, with a suggested project.
When to use the Career Skill Map?
When you want to know which of your skills matter most for your goal, which ones your goal does not ask for directly, and which missing skill deserves to be your first priority.
How to use the Career Skill Map?
- List your skills, with a level from 1 to 5 if you like.
- Enter the target role.
- Paste a real job’s requirements for a market-based map.
- Press “Draw the map”.
How to read the result
You get a map that sorts your skills into core and supporting, and shows the target gaps with development priorities. Start with the first two gaps on the list and the suggested project for each.
Tips for a better result
- Rate your level honestly on a scale of 1 to 5: heard of it, use it with help, use it independently, solve complex problems with it, teach it to others.
- Paste the requirements of a real posting so the gaps are based on an actual market.
- Place supporting skills in your resume after the core ones.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Raising every rating to the top, so no real gaps appear.
- Deleting supporting skills from your resume; they keep their value.
- Choosing the easiest gap rather than the most important one.
Note: The map depends on your self-assessment, and its quality is only as good as that assessment is honest.
Frequently asked questions
Why add a real job ad?
Without one, the map uses the general ladder for your field. A real ad reflects what employers ask for now.
